What's Upper?
Guru is said to be recovering from a successful
surgery last Monday, March 1 after suffering a heart
attack. Despite internet rumors that the rapper had
died, sources say the Gang Starr emcee is not
only doing “fine,” but should make a full recovery.
Guru's Statement: "I am doing fine and I am recovering!
I'm weak though. Solar is the only person who has
the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody
else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the
love!" A YouTube video has also been released by
Guru's nephew saying Solar is not letting any of Guru's
family member have contact with him. Here's Solar's
official statement, ""Guru is recovering and his doctors
are guarded, but hopeful for his recovery. Guru has a
history of lung problems and asthma and has been guarded
about revealing his health issues. "Guru has entrusted
me to be accurate and truthful in relaying information
to the media," Solar said. The legendary MC always tried
to keep his private life behind closed doors and Solar
said he was confused as to why Guru's nephew, Justin
Nicholas-Elam Ruff, accused Solar of withholding
information about the rapper from his family and not
allowing them to see him, given that Ruff's mother,
Trish, and other family members have visited with
Guru.
"It's
very, very baffling to me because his mother [Trish] was
at the hospital not even a week ago with Guru's brother
and his sister," Solar told CNN. "I speak to Guru's
father and his brother daily. This is amazingly untrue
and I have no idea what this is about."
"I
have nothing but the deepest love and respect for the
Elam family but I have not stopped them from seeing
Guru!" Solar added. Doctors have not given any
indication as to when Guru might be released, Solar
said, and the rapper is touched by the fan support.
"The
outpouring of love from around the world has been
tremendous," Solar said. "I'm reading some of the best
e-mails, texts and Twitters that come in and he enjoys
them. I think that's what has been helping his recovery
and what's got him in there fighting."
During what must be an incredibly hard and stressful
period in life, keep sending your prayers, thoughts, and
wishes to Guru, Solar and his loved ones.

Chill
Will
(WCBN-MI):
"What's up? Gotta say my prayers and many others prayers
go out to Guru during his health issues. Gonna
keep it short, but big shout to everyone I ran into at
the clubs this weekend. Also if your in the Detroit area
this weekend you can check me out Friday night at Shotz
sports bar inside the Greektown Casino. For more
information about me DJ Chill Will go to

Jason-D
(RadioBoise.org):
"I've definitely been thinking about Guru a lot
this week as many as you have. My best wishes on a
speedy recovery. I'm not privy to his medical insurance
situation but count my blessings that my day job affords
me to be covered. As many of the golden age rappers
approach their 50's, we will undoubtedly have more
occurences of our favorite artists suffering from more
serious medical conditions and I really wonder how many
of them are prepared finacially or have proper coverage
for the realities of growing old.
I
last saw Guru about 4 or 5 years ago while at CMJ
attending an event that Nasty Nes and
others sponsored at NY City College. He was very excited
about his new project with Solar and many of the
DJs were grilling him about not working with Premo.
He was a really good sport about it and took time to
take pictures, do drops, etc. I've had the pleasure of
meeting with Guru on several occasions and every time he
took the time and made the effort to connect with me. It
is my sincere hope that he recovers soon"...
Jeffrey Oakes
(WMHB-ME): "All Im going to say this week is a
shout-out to the Hip-Hop legend Guru, my thoughts
and prayers are with you!"...
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, BC): "Here in Vancouver
everyone is suffering from Olympic hangover. For
17 days we had an amazing buzz in the air, parties on
every corner, and of course exceptional athlete
performances to watch. Our Canadian athletes wind up
setting a new Winter Olympics record with an impressive
14 gold metals. Perhaps, one of the biggest surprises is
the amount of Americans, a 17 TV rating in fact, who
were also talking about the final match up between the
USA and Canada. That is a big yay for
hockey, which is truly one of the best sports on the
planet!
We tried to cheer up and fill the void of Vancouverites
with that quality Hip-Hop. We had producer Rel!g!on
join us to talk about his new CD “Revelationz I” as
well as the creative process from sampling and playing
beats to selecting MCs to rock on his beats.
www.myspace.com/religionbeats
We are extremely happy that the legendary Guru is
making a full recovery from his heart attack and send
our thoughts and prayers out to him and his loved ones.
Decided no time like the present to celebrate some of
our favourite Guru verses.
Check it all out at
www.urpradio.podomatic.com"...
Nate
Abney
(WKDU-Philly): "Well not as much to talk about
this week. Nothing to really go on. Pray for Guru
that he recovers. It is always alarming to hear about
someone so young ( and yes 43 is still young folks)
having issues let's hope for the best. I was listening
to Wu-Tang's last album and realized I was
sleeping on it. It was pretty good production wise and
lyrics wise. Gza is the illest. Villanova
got rocked by the Cuse but we'll see what happens
in the tourney.
The Phils are getting ready and the Yanks
are first up in Spring Training, just a preview of
what's going to happen"...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA):
"First & foremost, thoughts & best wishes go out to
Guru who suffered a heart attack and is recuperating
after surgery. So this past week I took a quick road
trip down to Los Angeles. While in LA, or “Plastic Town”
as I’ve been known to call it, I had a chance to hit a
couple events and catch up with a couple heads. Last
Tuesday I made my way to The Roxy on Sunset Blvd. for
Kevin Blacks' event. I got there at 7:15pm. The
problem was that the event, which started at 6:15pm, was
over when I arrived. WTF? Apparently another event was
booked for the same club a couple hours later and Kev
Black’s event was rushed out. So after a couple text
messages back & forth, I linked up with Nasty Nes
and made my way in the club. Inside I ran into D
Tragic, Arash, LA J and a few others. From there, 6
of us made our way down the block to Roscoe’s Chicken
& Waffles. Good food no doubt. After that I went
back to my hotel. Wednesday I had a meeting in the
morning which ran until around noon. After lunch, I
picked up a friend and hung out for the afternoon.
Before you know it, it was dinner time. Picked up Nasty
Nes at his crib and we rolled out to Santa Monica for
dinner with Kutmasta Kurt. And what better place
to have dinner than at Hooters? I love that
place. So much so that I was coerced into buying a
calendar. My arm didn’t need to be twisted to hard on
that one.
Thursday morning, I again had a couple errands to run
before I hit the road back to the Bay. Left LA around
1pm and got home around 8pm.
Shout
out to Nasty Nes, Arash & brother, D Tragic, Baby C,
Kutmasta Kurt, and everyone else I ran into while in
town. I might be back that way in April. Not sure
though. Happy belated birthday to my homie Mike
Nardone"...
DJ Resident (WKNC-NC): I wanted to
pass along to you that I have departed from WKNC-FM in
Raleigh, NC (the radio station for NCSU). My last
show was on 02/24/2010 after almost 15 years of holding
it down. My reason for leaving is that I am moving from
Raleigh to Philadelphia for a job. I’ve been dragging my
feet on giving folks the heads up since it’s been sort
of emotional for me to depart from not only a great
station, but to leave the airwaves after such a long
run, for the delay I apologize. My commitment is to
continue delivering the same raw, indy flavor on my
personal venue at djresident.org. Over the past year and
some change I have made the efforts to post all of my
radio shows for streaming (for free just like the
airwaves baby). I intend on providing continual content
of the same format and style that I brought to my radio
show to my internet only version. My hopes are that
after I get settled into my job that I can tap into the
radio resources in Philly and get back on the air (any
contacts or help you can pass along is greatly
appreciated), but I see no issues with me keeping the
djresident.org rocking and rolling. Next week I’ll be
sending out my new contact info and a notice about my
new circumstances to all my radio contacts.
It
will take me a couple of weeks (no longer than 4 weeks)
to get my equipment up to Philly and set back up such
that I can record content on a regular basis, and I just
wanted to see if not only can I continue reporting to
you as djresident.org but also get a pass on the charts
for a couple of weeks while I get moved and settled in.
I’m heading out to Philly Friday morning (02/26/2010)
with only my Jeep packed up, and much of the other stuff
will come the next weekend.
Nes,
it’s been a wonderful and lifelong memory to be at WKNC
and on the RapAttack panel, it’s both sad and
happy that I depart, but I would very much love to keep
on being a part of the movement. Please let me know if
we can get things bumping with the new venue"...
