What's
Upper?
Onetime Flavor Unit emcee Apache (born
Anthony Teaks) has passed away. Known largely for
his 1992 hit "Gangsta Bitch," Apache was a hardcore act
within
Queen Latifah and
45
King's Flavor Unit roster. He worked with
both hit-makers as well as fellow
Tommy Boy stars Naughty By Nature
and Flavor Unit original emcee Lakim Shabazz..
COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS by: DJ 3rd Rail (WNUR-Chicago)
A
PBS special that aired all over the country last
week. A film by Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew
McLeod that tackles the question "can you own a
sound"? It takes you to both sides of the coin. From
lawyers who say it's not only illegal to sample's
someone's work, but now the owners of the material have
a right to sue you. To people who say that you can't
copyright a beat. You hear from Public Enemy, De La
Soul and Digital Underground on some of the
ground breaking lawsuits. They explain how they didn't
know what they were doing was illegal. No one had been
sued prior to that point. They claim, that not until Hip
Hop was making millions that it wasn't an issue.
In
the film you meet Clyde Stubblefield, the
original funky drummer. James Brown drummer and
the world's most sampled musician. This is the highlight
of the film. You meet a humble talented musican. Who has
never made a penny from all his work that has been
sampled. Mostly because people who used his material
never mentioned him. nor did they ever intend to pay
anyone. Whatever money was paid for the sample was
collected by the label.
The
film was put together very well. It's a full 50 minutes
of history and tons of work. A must see for anyone who
is thinking about sampling. The only thing wrong with
this film is some of the people they have representing
the Hip Hop culture. Only a 10 second appearance by
Pete Rock. You would think people like Marley
Marl, DJ Premier, Beatnuts, RZA, D.I.T.C., would
have been interviewed?
If
you visit
pbs.org you can search for a program called
Independent Lens. The show is called Copyright Criminals
and look to see if they are playing it again in the near
future. It will open your eyes to something most of us
don't even think about...

ATTACK GOES 1on1 WITH JESSICA WEBER:
I
think the majority of you all already know me, but for
those of you who don't my name is Jessica, and I used to
work at a company called SPECTRE Entertainment Group.
Most of you know that SPECTRE was dissolved over the
holiday break, but you may not know that I started my
own company called Co-Sign .
I know it seems like A LOT has changed since the
holidays, but my situation is pretty simple. So, in an
attempt to clarify all the emails that have been
ping-ponging around in your inboxes over the last week
i'm here to answer a few FAQ's, and make sure you all
knew how to use

FAQ's...
Q: What is
co-sign? Is it a part of Distiller? or is it
SPECTRE? Or, what the hell is going on here? Too many
new companies!
A: No.
co-sign is it's own separate entity. It's not a part
of Distiller, or The Sanford Co., or anything else
within anything else.
Q:
Isn't
co-sign working some of the same records SPECTRE was
working before the holiday break? Why?
A: Yes. A bunch of the projects I'm working now are
things SPECTRE started before the the holiday, but are
clients I bought with me over to
co-sign. So, that's why I'm still in your ear about
records like Felt, Edan, Rita J, Donnis, Dutch and more.
That being said, I'm also really excited to be bringing
you new releases from Nneka, Lindstrøm & Christabelle,
Freeway, Groove Armada, Jay Electronica, RJD2, B.Dolan,
DJ Hell, Telephoned and more in the very near future.
Q: Where do I go to
download co-sign projects so i can add them to my
stations rotation/ rock 'em in the mix/ play them at the
club?
A: all you have to do is go to my website,
www.co-signcollective.com and click on the
huge thumbs up on the right side of the page
(bookmark this page!). then, just use your old SPECTRE
Digital login and password to get in.

WHAT'S BLAZIN' WITH BLAZE WONG?
by: BLAZE WONG:
Well
folks, 1st week in a Post Baccalaureate Pre-Med program
completed and this has proved to be a grueling past
week! Mentally, I have to challenge myself to get back
into the mode of thinking anatomical structures and
chemical breakdowns. Physically, the day begins at 5 AM
every morning! This will prove to be a very big
challenge indeed!
But for now, let's look at the "triple freshness" for
the week!
1. Rhymefest f. Little Brother "How High" DN
Entertainment / Rosehip / EMI
2. Diddy-Dirty Money f. Rick Ross "Angels" remix Bad Boy
/ Interscope Records
3. Snoop Dogg f. Jay-Z "I Wanna Rock" remix Capitol /
Priority Records
My business partner (Brian Gaffey), Nes
and I have teamed up to work this Rhymefest
project so please help support this great Hip-Hop
record! So feel free to reach out to Nes and I with any
inquiries you may have on Fest! Stay tuned next week as
I keep you up to date with my movement, give lessons on
proper business etiquette as a DJ and give you my latest
dish that I call, the "triple freshness."

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "Like to wish everyone
a Happy New Year and I'm glad to be back in the mix and
rocking the airwaves. Gonna be a short one to start the
year off. So I hope to run into a lot of the homies and
fam out west this weekend. Can't believe it's raining
like it is out there. LOL!!!! Just my luck. For more
information about me DJ Chill WIll go to

DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver BC): "Before getting
into anything further this week, we must give our
condolences to all the people who are in or have loved
ones in Haiti. Donations are still very much encouraged.
The easiest way is to text message HAITI to
90999 from your cellular phone, but there are many
charities to donate to that will make a difference in
the relief effort.
We got into a long anticipated double shot this week.
Richie Cunning's "Night Train" album is finally upon
us and available online. Richie is one of the Bay Area's
blue chippers and is making some nice moves with his
Rec League crew. Make sure you support this one,
it's quality!

We were then joined by FnL, an innovative
Vancouver group that pays homage to and reinvents past
classics in a creative and dope way. They
will be opening up for Raekwon the Chef on his
Canadian tour so if your city is one of the stops, check
em' out! Get up on things by going to
www.ChronicoMusicGroup.com,
www.FnL-Music.com,
www.Soundcloud.com,
www.TrackLeaker.com
and on Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo!
We got into some great tunes tonight, from Jay
Electronica, FnL, DL Incognito, Raekwon, Big Pooh, Souls
Of Mischief and many more! Check
out the Podcast on
www.UrbanRenewalProject.net shortly!"...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA):
"So I spent my birthday weekend in Vegas and it was
everything I expected minus the quickie wedding to a
stripper. Let's take a look back at what went down.
I got into Vegas Friday night around 7pm. Dropped of my
bags at the MGM Grand. Got sucked in to the casino
almost immediately. LOL. The Bankbusters Slot Machine
rules. Sort of. It ruled until it started taking my
unborn child's college fund. After losing a few dollars
there, it was time to take a stroll on the strip and
scope out the situation. Took a look at a few of the
other hotels & casino's before making my back to the MGM
to end the night. I was exhausted since we drove all day
from the Bay so by 1am, it was sleepy time.
Got up Saturday morning and went to do some picture
taking at various hotels. Made it by Mandalay Bay,
Tropicana, Luxor, Excalibur, and New York New York. Very
cool. Also took a walk through Aria. Cool stores. Later
in the day I made it through the "Miracle Mile" mall. If
only I had more cash. But anyway, Saturday night was
when it started to get live. Myself and my homie Joe
went over to the Hawaiian Tropic club. We had gotten VIP
passes earlier in the day and they were scheduled to
have a celebrity bartender for the night. It was this
girl Kari Ann Peniche from Dr. Drew's Sex
Rehab show. Bouncers told us she was gonna be there at
midnight. I thought perfect since at midnight my
birthday was official. So that would have been cool to
pretend she was there to celebrate with me. LOL. 1:15am
came and the bitch still hadn't shown. This little bitch
was trying to ruin my birthday bash. What the fuck?
Anyway. By that point, the beer wasn't helping me
tolerate the shit music being played so it was time to
leave. Walking back to the MGM from Hawaiian Tropic, I
ran in to Elvis. Check the pictures on Myspace
& Facebook. Took a quick picture and kept
walking. It was around this time I was ready to beat the
shit out of those jerkoff's that line up on every street
corner and hand out the "stripper to your room for $35"
cards. They line up like a college hazing. I began to
get in there face and everytime they tried to hand me
one and yelled "NO". Went back to MGM and did some more
gambling and some more drinking. Crashed out about
3:45am.
Sunday morning started a little slow. Got breakfast and
did some minor shopping. Watched some good football in
hotel bar. Played a little on slot machines. And before
you know it, it was time for the birthday dinner.
Stepped across the street for a good meal at Hooters
that came along with some great viewing if you know what
I mean. Shout out to our server Desiree from New
Jersey. Ended the night with more slot machines and more
free drinks from the roaming waitresses.
Monday was "drive back to the bay" day. Nothing too
eventful there"...
Nate
Abney
(WKDU-PA): "Another week and another legend lost.
Philly lost R&B legend Teddy Pendergrass. It was
a sad day because he was such a legendary singer to
most. I think he helped make baby making music official.
Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P. Teddy P.
Glad to see the Cowboys got stomped ( I can't
stand that stinking star). Sixers and Flyers
still suck, so I'll be watching a lot more of
Villanova and Temple until March. May we
continue to pray for those in Haiti also"...
Jeep
Ward
(DJ HALO) (WPKN-CT): "Coming to you Live
from a crazy marathon radio show 11p-6am (!!!) so what
else could I do but get my NEWLY Expanded top 40 chart
together for you. How about that??? Multitasking like
whut, maybe I should do my taxes too. I will be posting
a mix of my top 40 on my site Thursday night so be on
the looks for that. I hope all else is well on your
end"...
