What's
Upper?
Michael Jackson
has died. He was 50. The first album I ever bought with
my own money, was back in 1970. I was moving to the
United States & on our connecting flight in Hawaii I
bought The Jackson 5's "ABC" (Motown)
album in the airport! In 1984 I was fortunate to see
Michael & his brothers reunite for "The Victory" tour! A
few more memories include getting awarded a Michael
Jackson PLATINUM plaque for his album "Bad" and hanging
out in the ATL at a Jack The Rapper
conference in the penthouse suite & in walks in the
Jacksons (minus Michael). I was literally no more than 5
feet away from each Jackson! Last Sunday at the
BET Awards, they dedicated their entire show to
Michael Jackson. If you followed TWITTER that
day, heads either at the show or watching it on TV
dissed it BIG time. Some of the feedback included,
"Overall verdict, the BET Awards show was a damned mess
w/ some VERY excellent moments, a bunch of very bad lows
& a few moments of aiight," "The BET Awards superseded a
hot mess and was an actual simmering crock of sh#t,"
"Can't wait for the Grammy's to do a REAL tribute for
MJ," "The BET awards were horrible and embarrasing at
best... Wow... So disappointed!!!," "OHHHH! I get it!!!
It was the EBT Awards!!!" and " All I'm saying is that
Mike Jack deserves a much better tribute than what we
saw." This years' BET awards was graded a "D" to a "F."
Highlights for me included performances by The O'Jays,
New Edition, Jay-Z, Janet's speech at the
ending & Ne-Yo was SO AWESOME! In closing
here's what MJ's ex wife, Lisa Marie Presley had
to say about Michael:
"He
Knew. Years ago Michael and I were having a deep
conversation about life in general. I can't recall the
exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me
about the circumstances of my Fathers Death. At some
point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he
stated with an almost calm certainty, "I am afraid that
I am going to end up like him, the way he did."
I
promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which
point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost
matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he
knew and that was kind of that. 14 years later I am
sitting here watching on the news an ambulance leaves
the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds
outside the gates, the coverage, the crowds outside the
hospital, the Cause of death and what may have led up to
it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did
the unstoppable tears. A predicted ending by him, by
loved ones and by me, but what I didn't predict was how
much it was going to hurt when it finally happened. The
person I failed to help is being transferred right now
to the LA County Coroners office for his Autopsy.
All
of my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard
to achieve over the years has just gone into the bowels
of hell and right now I am gutted.
I am
going to say now what I have never said before because I
want the truth out there for once.
Our
relationship was not "a sham" as is being reported in
the press. It was an unusual relationship yes, where two
unusual people who did not live or know a "Normal life"
found a connection, perhaps with some suspect timing on
his part. Nonetheless, I do believe he loved me as much
as he could love anyone and I loved him very much. I
wanted to "save him" I wanted to save him from the
inevitable which is what has just happened. His family
and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as
well but didn't know how and this was 14 years ago. We
all worried that this would be the outcome then.
At
that time, In trying to save him, I almost lost myself.
He was an incredibly dynamic force and power that was
not to be underestimated. When he used it for something
good, It was the best and when he used it for something
bad, It was really, REALLY bad. Mediocrity was not a
concept that would even for a second enter Michael
Jackson's being or actions.
I
became very ill and emotionally/ spiritually exhausted
in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive
behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he
would always manage to magnetize around him. I was in
over my head while trying. I had my children to care
for, I had to make a decision.
The
hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to
walk away and let his fate have him, even though I
desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it
somehow. After the Divorce, I spent a few years
obsessing about him and what I could have done
different, in regret. Then I spent some angry years at
the whole situation. At some point, I truly became
Indifferent, until now.
As I
sit here overwhelmed with sadness, reflection and
confusion at what was my biggest failure to date,
watching on the news almost play by play The exact
Scenario I saw happen on August 16th, 1977 happening
again right now with Michael (A sight I never wanted to
see again) just as he predicted, I am truly, truly
gutted. Any ill experience or words I have felt towards
him in the past has just died inside of me along with
him.
He
was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as
close to him as I did and to have had the many
experiences and years that we had together.
I
desperately hope that he can be relieved from his pain,
pressure and turmoil now.
He
deserves to be free from all of that and I hope he is in
a better place or will be.
I
also hope that anyone else who feels they have failed to
help him can be set free because he hopefully finally
is. The World is in shock but somehow he knew exactly
how his fate would be played out some day more than
anyone else knew, and he was right.
I
really needed to say this right now, thanks for
listening.~Lisa Marie Presley"...
Last
week we also experienced the sad passing away of two
icons. Television legend and longtime 'Tonight Show'
sidekick
Ed
McMahon has passed away. He was 86 years
old and
Farrah Fawcett, the actress who
shot to worldwide fame thanks to her role in 'Charlie's
Angels' and other Hollywood ventures along the way, has
passed away after a long battle with cancer. She was 62
years old...
Rihanna's
first court appearance in ex-beau Chris Brown's
assault case has resulted in a plea. Brown plead
guilty to all charges and in return will face up to five
years probation and 180 days community service, which
he's decided to serve in his Virginia hometown. As part
of the deal Brown was also ordered to stay away from the
Bajian singer who did not testify and entered the
courthouse through a back entrance after Brown left...
SEATTLE WEEKLY
by JONATHAN CUNNINGHAM: "Steelo's Music
For the Ladies - The R&B duo is as diverse as the scene
that spawned it: If anything gets less exposure than
Seattle's underpublicized R&B scene, it's the fact that
multicultural artists are a part of it. But with a
half-Iranian, half-Mexican rapper and an
Italian-American crooner, Steelo are trying to
change that. After teaming up five years ago in
Bellingham, the now-Seattle-based R&B-boy tandem are
creating club jams tailored for the ladies. On their
impressive debut album, Music, rapper A.Uno and
singer Bobby K aim straight for mainstream
audiences with radio-friendly jams that don't bore as
much as one would expect"...

THE
SCRATCH DJ ACADEMY GUIDE
ON
THE RECORD: The Scratch DJ Academy Guide
is an authoritative guide to the dynamic art of DJing.
More than just a “how-to,” this is a sonic adventure,
guiding readers through 40 years of music, creativity,
and culture. From beat matching to body tricks,
Grandmaster Flash to Fatboy Slim, the Bronx
to Ibiza, On the Record is the definitive cultural guide
to this art form. So whether you're learning the ropes,
considering going pro, or just want to tap your inner
DJ, this book is for you.
Testimonials:
“This book needs to be in your vinyl collection. It's
what every DJ needs to be in the game and every music
fan needs to understand the game. I put all my producers
and DJ's on this 'cuz it's what's gonna take them to the
next level.”
-Snoop Dogg
“It's time for someone to document the success of the
art of DJing and where it's going. We're at that point
where we need some kind of bible that covers every
aspect of DJ culture. This book can do that.”
-DJ AM
"ON THE RECORD is a blueprint for anyone who has
ever thought about getting into DJing. It explores how
we do it, but more importantly, why we do what we do.
The old and new school masters break it all down here."
-Z-Trip
“Having worked with many DJ's in my life and being one
myself, I can tell you that this book is a must-read. If
you're a battle champion, a club DJ, or just a music
enthusiast, you will definitely benefit from reading
this book. Every one of us is a DJ. This book just makes
us better. It's about time!”
-Darryl McDaniels of Run-D.M.C.
About
the Book
Despite the popularity and allure of the DJ, access to
the art form, culture and lifestyle has been tucked away
behind velvet ropes. Until now. The first book featuring
Scratch DJ Academy, the world's premiere brand in DJ
education and access, explains how DJs are some of the
most important artists in music and influencers in our
culture today. ON THE RECORD: The Scratch DJ Academy
Guide, gives readers an exciting peak into this
dynamic world, ultimately challenging everyone to tap
their inner DJ.
This book helps readers understand what to listen for in
music, where to purchase it, how to perform it and more.
Most books about DJs add to the DJ's mystique, but this
book brings them out of the shadows to show that they're
not very different than everyone else. ON THE RECORD
is more than a how-to guide, and explains the DJ's
lifestyle, culture, and abilities.
The term “disc jockey” started out as an insulting term,
assuming that the job simply entailed riding records in
the radio booth. It was a daunting task to move from
playing music on the radio to performing in front of
live audiences, since people at the time were used to
live bands and orchestras. But the DJ persevered, and
decades later legends like Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster
Flash, and Kool Herc introduced Hip Hop to the nation,
while Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles established the
infectious roots of House music. ON THE RECORD
takes the reader inside the radio stations, block
parties, raves, and clubs where it all started.
ON THE RECORD delves into the reality of being a
DJ and the culture that surrounds it. The book looks at
the lives of celebrity DJs – how they got their start,
their travel, and the bookings that keep them going. It
includes interviews, useful tips, and fun anecdotes from
the world's top DJs including DJ AM, Z-Trip and Pete
Tong. But these pros aren't the only ones who can live
the DJ life. The authors advise beginners on how to get
going, from handling your first gig to getting a club
residency and beyond. In the end, it all pays off. DJs
not only influence the music you listen to now and will
in the future, but also the clothes you wear, the TV and
movies you watch, and the technology you use.
Musically, DJs do much more than just sling records and
make people dance; they have to draw on their knowledge
of song structure, rhythm, BPM and tempo and much more.
Luckily, ON THE RECORD shows you how to listen to
and appreciate music like a DJ. The book explains the
old and the new equipment, the techniques and even
explains the art of the mixtape. It also includes DIY
exercises, so you'll learn firsthand how to mix,
scratch, and “drop on the 1”. And there's even a
glossary to define everything from cueing and sampling
to beatmatching and beat juggling.
Whether you want to go pro, impress your friends at
house parties, or just a music enthusiast, this is your
book.

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"What's up fam? Damn it's already the end of June and I
have only been to the beach 1 time. Too much damn work
going on, but I have to say I'm glad to have a job.
Speaking of jobs, what would you all say is the average
amount of jobs a person has had in their life time. I've
had 8 jobs that I would considfer "real jobs" and none
of them is what I really want to do. The job I have now
is something I want to do, but even now I'm having
second thoughts about it. It's kind of like that "been
there done that" feeling with this job. People say you
should find a job that you love doing, so it doesn't
feel like a job, but how can I get that job when there's
no openings, and the pay is shitty. I'm not saying money
is everything, but have to be honest; can't live off a
job that only pays 30,000 a year. That's just not going
to cut it, especially with a family"...
Jason-D
(RadioBoise.Org):
"I think it's no secret that I wasn't much of a fan of
the emo-rap movement that was Kanye & Common's
last album but I did understand their desire to do
something different. This week I had a chance to listen
to Mos Def's new album The Ecstatic. Maybe
it was the article I just read on him somewhere but my
expectations were aiming right were Kanye and Common
left off. Man was I wrong. There's at least 6 solid boom
bap tracks on there. Some of the tracks remind me of
early Cypress Hill with all the weird samples and
beat changes in the middle of the songs. In any case,
Mos gets much respect from me for making a left turn,
doing his own shit, and keeping it Hip-Hop. Turns out
you don't have to wear tight pants and autotune to win.
I play a mix of 5 joints off his album to start the
show. Download the show here if

Shouts to Jessica @ Spectre for the
Soul Assassins "Intermission" and DJ JS-1 "No
Sell Out - Ground Original" albums. You need these in
your life"...
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, Canada): "We were then
joined by Snak The Ripper over the phone, live
from the Snak Cave. The Vancity MC shed some light on
the production credits and features on his sophomore
solo album, "Sex Machine". We also got into a few
exclusive cuts from the LP, so don't sleep! The album
will
be available on

That was it for interviews tonight, but we did get into
plenty of music, from new bangers to old classics. We
had everything from DJ Quik to Blaq Poet,
Tash to Tona, Marco Polo & Torae,
Mos Def, Snak The Ripper and plenty more! Check
out the podcast on

Chill
Will
(WCBN-MI):
"What's up folks? Had a great week of events and I'm
also looking forward to a well deserved vacation in
Cali. Well DJing has never been work so it's still a
vacation. Last Friday rocked the Chrysler Museum with
Kid Rock's DJ Paradime. And had the pleasure of
meeting Willie T. Davidson of Harley-Davidson.
Who had some dope bikes and designs on hand, while
Chrysler had some dope new joints not out. Plus the
Omni if you remember that LOL!!!! Hit U.S. 12 Saturday
and ran into a lot of faces I hadn't seen in a while.
What up Doe!!!!"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH): "Fresh off my latest adventure in the
Virginia/D.C. area where your boy narrowly avoided
getting killed once again. I think my next trip will be
to Iran, it seems like a much safer place. While trying
to navigate from the Washington Nationals stadium to a
waterfront bar, one of my friends suggested that we save
money and hoof it in lieu of a cab. As the stadium slunk
from view, we found ourselves walking through a dim
neighborhood that resembles a set from "The Wire". As we
crossed one block, a Police Cruiser rolled by and an
Officer hung out the window. "Where are you going?"
he asked. When we told him the waterfront, he bellowed "DO
NOT go that way" and commanded us to walk in the
other direction. As we took the alternative route we saw
at least a dozen Police cars zipping around, got
harrassed by a drunk crack fiend, and heard the faint
crackle of either fireworks or some gang banger's Tec-9.
I'm going to say it was the Tec-9 because it ads to my
street cred. As if me having more street cred was even
possible!
Speaking of street cred, you won't find any near
Snoop Dogg after he just finished a track with
Talib Kweli, Soulja Boy, and Buzz Aldrin.
That's right, famous old geezer astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
The song entitled "Rocket Experience" is intended
to get kids interested in science. "Buzz has got the
biggest buzz on the streets right now," Snoop said.
"He's got Talib Kweli and (me) in the studio with
him, and I only work with the best." OK Snoop. Maybe
you know something I don't know, but after doing a song
with an old white guy, I'm calling bullsh!t on your
first six albums. I don't think that Buzz is one of your
homeboys with a pocket full of rubbers. I can't wait for
the "Gz & Hustlas Remix" feat. Neil Armstrong.
I'm not sure why Will.I.Am beat up fake celebrity
Perez Hilton, but if they were arguing over who
is gayer, I think I would call it a tie. What the hell
happened to Black Eyed Peas? I'm ashamed these
days to say that I played "Fallin' Up" in my
early days on the radio. They once seemed like the next
A Tribe Called Quest and now they are like
Color Me Badd"...
