Democrat presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama tapped Senator Joe Biden as his choice for Vice President. The Delaware Senator had been on a list of running mates on the Obama ticket. The news comes on the eve of the Democratic National convention, kicking off this week in Denver.

The U.S. Olympics Mens basketball team secured gold medals sitting on top of the world at the 2008 Beijing games after beating Spain. Team USA, led by Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant, restored the States as a force to be reckoned with similar to the flawless Michael Jordan/Earvin "Magic" Johnson 1992 Olympic squad. Immediately following the victory, an excited Lebron James told the press: "That'll probably go down as one of the greatest Olympic games ever."  Once again props to Michael Phelps winner of 8 gold medals beating Mark Spitz record from back in 1972!...

DID SCIENTOLOGY KILL ISAAC HAYES? Isaac Hayes' History With Scientology

By Roger Friedman FOX News

http://www.4dasoul.com/main/index.php?option=com

_content&view=article&id=278%3Adid-scientology-kill-isaachayes&Itemid=173

Isaac Hayes, died on Sunday, and his passing leaves many unanswered questions.

The great R&B star, actor, DJ, performer and family man, the composer of “Soul Man,” “Hold On I’m Coming” and other hits by Sam Moore and Dave Prater like “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby,” also was a member of the
Church of Scientology.

Isaac was found dead by his treadmill, but conveniently missing from the wire stories was a significant fact: in January 2006, Isaac had a significant stroke. At the time, the word went out only that he had been hospitalized for exhaustion.

But the truth was, Isaac, whom I’d seen just a couple of months earlier when he headlined the Blues Ball in
Memphis, was in trouble. Having lost the rights to his songs two decades earlier, he was finally making some money voicing the character of Chef on “South Park.” But “South Park” lampooned Scientology, so the leaders wanted Isaac out.

Push came to shove on Nov. 16, 2005, when “South Park” aired its hilarious “Trapped in the Closet” episode spoofing Tom Cruise and John Travolta. “South Park” creator Matt Stone told me later that Isaac had come to him in tears.

·          “He said he was under great pressure from Scientology, and if we didn’t stop poking at them, he’d have to leave," Stone said.

The conversation ended there. Isaac performed Chef’s signature song at the Blues Ball a week later with great delight. Although he was devoted to Scientology, he also loved being part of “South Park.” He was proud of it. And, importantly, it gave him income he badly needed.

But then came the stroke, which was severe. His staff — consisting of Scientology monitors who rarely left him alone — tried to portray it as a minor health issue. It wasn’t. Sources in Memphis told me at the time that Isaac had significant motor control and speech issues. His talking was impaired.

In March 2006, news came that Hayes was resigning from “South Park." On March 20, 2006, I wrote a column called “Chef’s Quitting Controversy,” explaining that Hayes was in no position to have quit anything due to his stroke. But Scientology issued the statement to the press saying Hayes had resigned, and the press just ate it up. No one spoke to Isaac directly, because he couldn’t literally speak. "Chef” was written out of the show.

Isaac’s income stream was severely impaired as a result. Suddenly there were announcements of his touring, and performing. It didn’t seem possible, but word went out that he’d be at BB King’s in New York in January 2007. I went to see him and reported on it here.

The show was abomination. Isaac was plunked down at a keyboard, where he pretended to front his band. He spoke-sang, and his words were halting. He was not the Isaac Hayes of the past.

What was worse was that he barely knew me. He had appeared in my documentary, "Only the Strong Survive," released in 2003. We knew each other very well. I was actually surprised that his Scientology minder, Christina Kumi Kimball, with whom I had difficult encounters in the past, let me see him backstage at BB King’s. Our meeting was brief, and Isaac said quietly that he did know me. But the light was out in his eyes, and the situation was worrisome.

But the general consensus was that he needed the money. Without “Chef,” Isaac’s finances were severely curtailed. He had mouths to feed to home. Plus, Scientology requires huge amounts of money, as former member, actor Jason Beghe, has explained in this space. For Isaac to continue in the sect, he had to come up with funds. Performing was the only way.

In recent months, I’ve had conflicting reports. One mutual friend says that Isaac had looked and sounded much better lately at business meetings. But actor Samuel L. Jackson, who recently filmed scenes with Isaac and the late Bernie Mac for a new movie called “Soul Men,” told me on Saturday that Isaac really wasn’t up to the physical demands of shooting the movie. (Neither, it seems, was Bernie Mac.)

Sam Moore, who recorded those Isaac Hayes songs in the '60s and loved the writer-performer like a brother, told me Sunday when he heard about the death: “I’m happy.” Happy, I asked? “Yes, happy he’s out of pain.” It was one of the most beautiful ideas I’d ever heard expressed on the subject of death.

But there are a lot of questions still to be raised about Isaac Hayes’ death. Why, for example, was a stroke survivor on a treadmill by himself? What was his condition? What kind of treatment had he had since the stroke? Members of Scientology are required to sign a form promising they will never seek psychiatric or mental assistance. But stroke rehabilitation involves the help of neurologists and often psychiatrists, not to mention psychotropic drugs — exactly the kind Scientology proselytizes against.

What will come next, I’m afraid, is a wild dogfight among family members for Isaac’s estate. His song catalog (with David Porter) is one of the greatest in music history. Isaac lost the rights to his big hit songs in 1977. But thanks to something called the Songwriters Act, his heirs — whoever they are determined to be — automatically get the rights back as the songs come up for copyright renewal. I guarantee this will not be pretty. Isaac Lee Hayes has over 300 original compositions listed with
BMI, from the Sam & Dave songbook to Carla Thomas’ “BABY (Baby)” to his monumental instrumental “Theme from SHAFT.”

None of this should ever take away from who Isaac Hayes really was: a great friend, a warm congenial man with a big heart and a big laugh. He had married again right before his stroke, and was very happy. If he hadn’t had the stroke, I am certain he would have recorded a new album. There was talk of it after the stroke, but nothing materialized. When we made and promoted “Only the Strong Survive,” he was a masterful musician with a great mind and a wicked sense of humor.

His loss at 65 is simply way too early and very tragic...

Just peeped out the DVD for "Inside The Circle." Filmed in Austin, TX this movie is a must for not only B-Boys & B-Girls but Hip-Hop lovers period. It's almost like watching a reality show but it's based on 2 best friends who end up battling each other on rival dance teams Masterz Of Mayhem & Jive Turkeys. Romeo Navarro who is the founder & holds Austin's yearly "B-Boy City" events plays a significant role in the film as they show him grinding from the beginning stages to now. This is a magnificent dvd & I really enjoyed watching this great work captured on film. Here's a lil run down on the cast & film:

ROMEO NAVARRO :Romeo is 31 years old, and the founder of Texas’s longest running b-boy event, B-Boy City. He has loved music and art all his life, and learned James Brown’s moves at age 10. Romeo has been throwing Hip-Hop events in Austin since 1997; XIV B-Boy City was held in May 2007.

JOSH AYERS :Josh (“Milky”) is 21 years old and currently lives in LA. He started b-boyin’ on the west coast in 1998, and moved to Texas the summer of 1999.  He was in Texas “training and struggling” for four years, where he joined Masterz of Mayhem out of the Rio Grande Valley. Josh moved to Florida in 2005 to work for High Voltage at Universal Studios, and in other shows up and down the East Coast.

He’s now also a member of Florida-based crew M.I.N.D.180, and has performed with them on the Ellen Degeneres Show and Don Francisco Presenta. Recently, Josh moved to LA to book commercial work, and has also been booking a lot more underground battles, traveling to Europe and Korea.  He went on tour this summer with Fergie, in the UK.

OMAR DAVILA:Omar is 21 years old and commutes between Austin and the Caribbean. He is a member of Jive Turkeys & Mighty Zulu Kingz, and is sponsored by Tribal Gear. Omar works for G-Force Entertainment, which provides shows for Carnival Cruise Lines and other venues.  He is a “Fly-On” entertainer, and dances in an 80's show called "Far From Over," working on three different ships...The Fascination, The MS Valor, and The MS Sensation. Capturing the raw power of a grassroots Hip-Hop movement in the heart of Texas, INSIDE THE CIRCLE tells the story of two strikingly talented b-boys, Josh and Omar, former best friends who become rivals when they join competing dance crews. Immersed in the b-boy culture of defiant creativity, Omar rises to international renown while Josh tangles with the Texas criminal justice system. Both of them struggle to keep dance at the center of their lives, and the “B-Boy City” competitive events thrown by visionary street dancer Romeo Navarro serve as emotional milestones in their journey to adulthood. Facing off in intense dance battles that mirror the larger events in their lives, Josh and Omar seekredemption, identity and respect

INSIDE THE CIRCLE is the result of a four-year collaboration between filmmaker Marcy Garriott and some of Texas’most talented b-boys, musicians and other artists. Marcy first took her camera to B-Boy City 8 (Austin, Texas) in 2002, and was hooked after the first battle.

Every b-boy and b-girl has a strong story to tell, and every battle or cypher reveals something about the lives and passions of those who are dancing. Although the film ultimately focused on three of those stories as they unfolded over the next few years, the hope is that they represent something of the universal passion, dedication and struggle of all b-boys and b-girls. Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "This message is for you artists and/or people who represent Hip Hop artists. If you're rep for an artist, please pass this message on to them.

I know it's been a while since I sent out any updates but things are still going strong on this end. In fact, they are going so well that I'll be celebrating my 15th year on the air at KHDC on September 17th and I want you all to be a part of the fun.

Now obviously I can't schedule everyone to call in during the two hour broadcast but what I can do is play some pre-recorded messages from you during the show. So if you are available or interested in recording a quick message of congratulations, all you have to do is call 831.454.0375 and leave the message. Simple right?

The general script would run similar to this. "Hey this is________________ and I want to congratulate DJ Kazzeo for rockin' the last 15 years on the air at KHDC". Any ad-libs you want to add are greatly encouraged.
Note: My name is, Kazzeo, is pronounced "Kazzy Oh" similar to "Jazzy Flow". The deadline to record the message is September 12th.
Thank you all in advance for taking part in this big day"...

Nesto (WODU-VA): "Aight I'm feeling the Olympics right now. The more exciting stuff is on now. Homeboy Bolt from Jamaica is crazy fast. Dude is insanely fast. WOW.. I'm feeling for the hurdler from the USA that had the gold but she hit the second to last hurdle. Her name is Lolo, and she was definitely going to get that gold. The women's USA beach volleyball team is tearing it up too. Good stuff. And how about Mr. Phelps getting them 8 gold medals, that's big, and bigging up Jeezy and Wayne's music. Not that I'm a big fan of either one, but that was a good look"...

Raw-B (KUSF-SF): "Listen to our archived shows to hear your joints. Go to http://www.myspace.com/beatsauceradio and click on the link labeled: undefined"...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver BC, Canada): "Last show we had a banging show even though we had to fight through some technical glitches in the beginning. We had DJ Warrior from LA and Kyprios from Sweatshop Union talk to us about their current projects. DJ Warrior and Sweatshop Union have both been on the grind and will be in Vancity this Friday. DJ Warrior has been working hard with some of Cali's finest, Bishop Lamont "Calitriot" mixtape of my favourite and I know he going to tear it down at Shine Nightclub alongside myself this Friday. Unfortunately, that means I will not be able to check out the Sweatshop Union show also on Friday at Richards on Richards, but I have been feeling and recommend the new album "Water Street" out now on Battle Axe.

www.myspace.com/djwarrior
www.myspace.com/sweatshopunion7

Later in the same show we had a World Premier Track from Mr. Lif called "Presidential Report Vol. 1". This track breaks down the current
US political maneuvers, and I am definitely excited about his new blog series "I Heard It Today". Mr. Lif also weighed in on our new 10 week bit about MTV's Top Ten Hip-Hop albums of all time. At #10 was Public Enemy's album "It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back". Mr. Lif broke down how this album is the best and most influential Hip-Hop album of all time! Check out the podcast to see what the rest us thought"...

DJ Jason-D (RadioBoise.org): "Special guest DJ and legendary producer Kut Masta Kurt blessed me with an Isaac Hayes tribute mix this week. If you've ever heard Kurt on the Wake Up Show then you'll know he's famous for playing the original break and then the Hip Hop record that sampled it. This tribute mix follows the spirit of that style and really highlights the impact that Isaac Hayes had on Hip Hop. It's really well done and shouts to Kurt for hooking me up. I gave it an early play for some folks and the conversation instantly turns to mentions of other tracks that used the same sample. It would be an impossible task to include them all. Kurt points out that he didn't even included the Shaft records which easily could have doubled the mix. R.I.P. Isaac Hayes. The show won't be posted until this weekend but Rap Attack readers can hit the secret link early at www.djjasond.com/play20080820.m3u.

In terms of new music, I was really surprised by the new GZA/Genius "Pro Tools" cd. It has a classic Wu Tang sound to it that was just really refreshing to me. GZA is on point lyrically. I also found that 80% of it was radio safe from jump (GZA not needing to curse to get his point across) so it was loaded and ready to go for me. Finally, I really can't say enough about Elzhi and Kam Moye (Supastition). I've been bangin tracks off Elzhi's "Euro Pass 2008" cd and many of the tracks made it to his US release "The Preface" which is out now. One new track on "The Preface" called "Guessing Game" with Black Milk is lyrically ridiculous. It literally is a game where he's challenging you to guess what he will say next. He ends one rhyme with a word like "Con" in the sense of tricking someone and then starts the next line of his rhyme with another word that would change the meaning of the word like "Dumb". Combined it makes "condom" but he really uses con and dumb in their unique meanings. You'll hit rewind a few times to keep up. Kam Moye's "Self-Centered EP" is still one of the best EP's of the year and this week we featured "Reach One" with Kaze that has that early 90's positive message that's missing from most of the music today Finally, shouts to Marco Polo for hitting me off the new Large Pro "Hardcore Hip Hop" = real boom bap"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "The Olympics are off the chain and Usain Bolt is the new name to know if you don't follow track and field like I do. Michael Phelps was great but I think the greatest Olympian of all time is a bit much. I'll give him the greatest swimmer of all time though. Someone must have made KRS-ONE mad recently because the quality of work he is doing is noteworthy. Test him for banned substances(LOL). The Phils are doing their usual while the Birds are getting ready to do something I hope. Enjoy the rest of the Olympics and I will talk to everyone next week"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "I think the oddest Hip-Hop story that I have heard in a long time is the reports I keep reading about MF Doom booking shows and then sending an imposter wearing his trademark Dr. Doom mask to perform in his place. Other than outright deception and thievery, I really can't think of an excuse of why an underground artist with a modest fan base would do this. If he doesn't want to perform, he should just cancel his shows. As a fan, I'd be less disappointed if the artist cancelled on me than stole my money by sending some lip-syncher out on stage. I haven't seen self centered greed like this since Brett Favre.

Speaking of Dr. Dooom (three o's), aka Kool Keith, you should really check out his new video "R.I.P. Dr. Octagon":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMeOrWuOtBI

If you ever had any doubt that this guy is out of his mind, this video will erase it.

Dear Washington Nationals:
I'm sorry that your team is 24 games out of first place. When I visited your stadium this past weekend, I was a little surpised that you charged me $20 for a same-day seat in right field when the park was half empty. So when my friends and I decided to plop down in the back row of a COMPLETELY EMPTY 200 seat section of center field to enjoy a beer, we really didn't think you'd mind. But you taught us a lesson as your gestapo ushers swooped in quicker than DMX gets arrested to give us the bum's rush. So enjoy the rest of your season, and please continue to wonder why nobody roots for your team. Because you still have Wily Mo Pena and us Red Sox fans are always in the pennant race"...
