What's
Upper? Two tragic deaths within' one week. Comedian
Bernie Mac died at Northwestern Memorial hospital
early Saturday morning. He was 50. Though the cause of
death has not been confirmed, Mac had been hospitalized
recently for pneumonia. And Isaac Hayes, the
singer, songwriter and musician whose "Theme From
Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards,
died on Sunday. He was 65. I remember meeting Bernie Mac
at the
Hollywood
screening of "Blade II." We were sitting in the same row
& I shook his hands! With Issac Hayes, growing up
watching, "Shaft" always brought back memories of the
theme single but it was Issac's dance hit, "Don't Let
Go" which was one of the first records I learned to mix
with on my two turntables. (R.I.P.)...
Independent from day One...An Interview w/ Slug of
Atmosphere

An-Interview-w-Slug-from-Atmosphere
We sat down and spoke with Slug from the group
Atmosphere. He is the cornerstone of one of the
world's most celebrated rhyme collectives-the
Rhymesayers.
We kicked off the interview by talking about the name
Atmosphere. Many people see Slug and think his name is
Atmosphere and don't realize that he's part of a
group sporting that name.So for those who don't know,
lets be sure we understand-Slug is the emcee and his
partner Anthony (Ant)is the producer. He
explained it like this.He said think of Atmopshere like
Gang Starr which breaks down to Guru being
the emcee and DJ Premier being the producer.
Once we got that out the way we talked about the
direction he's taken on the new album 'When Life
Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold'.
Slug explained that its important to change things up
and push yourself as well as the audience. He admits
that this new album is a departure from what fans are
used to hearing. He said it was important for him and
Ant to do something strictly forself. It was important to
experiment
We went deeper with this conversation as we talked about
the art of sampling versus using live instruments and a
band. We talked about the limitations and high costs
sampling has when allowing one to open up and fully
express oneself.
We also spoke about what it takes for an artist to
deliver a social or political message to the Hip Hop
audience. Slug says he doesn't want top be preachy but
knows its important not to let important things go
unacknowledged.
We talked about the relationship the Rhymesayers
collective has with other well known rhyme groups like
Living Legends, Quannum, Hiero and
Def Jux.Slug says many of them know and like each
other and that they were able to build and really bond
on last year's Paid Dues Tour.Slug explained that
they learned a lot from Living Legends especially along
the lines of fan interaction and treating people right.
We talked about the racial politics within Hip Hop and
what its like to have large white fan bases. We talked
about whether or not it bothers the group to not be as
well known by Black folks in the hood. We got deep with
that discussion.
We talked about Presidential candidate Barack Obama
and his relationship to Hip Hop. Slug gave his
thoughts on whether or not Obama is a beneficiary of
groups like Atmosphere touring the country for the past
10-15 years and performing before large rural and white
audiences and ultimately politicizing them who are now
voting for Obama.
We concluded our interview by talking about mainstream
Hip Hop versus the underground.Slug says he's a big fan
of the Black Eyed Peas and admires the fact that
they seem to have fun. He says that's the essence of Hip
Hop and way too many acts forget that. He's not mad at
the mainstream and feels there should be more
interaction. We closed out with Slug acknowledging that
as a Minneapolis resident that he would love to hook up
and do a song with fellow Minneapolis resident Morris

The highly anticipated second solo album from Brooklyn's
independent hip-hop kingpin ILL
BILL
is
finally scheduled for release on the Uncle Howie/Fat
Beats label. The former Non Phixion standout
and current La Coka Nostra riot-starter has
surgically crafted THE very album the Hip-Hop world has
been missing and craving for far too long.
Whether holding it down alongside iconic MCs such as
Raekwon the Chef and B-Real or with their
spiritual disciples Immortal Technique, Vinnie
Paz and Necro or masterminding stellar
collaborations with the likes of the legendary Bad
Brains and heavy metal thrashers Killswitch
Engage, Bill confidently swaggers the line between
genres with fellow visionaries DJ Premier, DJ
Muggs, T-Ray, DJ Lethal and others
behind the boards. Also, for the first time, a bulk of
the production has been propelled by Bill himself.
Along with the exactly one hour long audio disc, comes a

numerous controversial album covers for the mighty
Slayer, including their classic Reign In Blood.

Rap
legend and Hip Hop activist KRS One is issuing a
call to action from DJ's nationwide to join and
participate in the upcoming Million DJ March, by
becoming directly involved himself. KRS One's legendary
contributions to the evolution of Hip Hop and
well-documented work with his Stop the Violence
Movement, coupled with the fact that he began his
own career as a DJ make him the perfect spokesperson for
this groundbreaking event.
"I
am a DJ. I started my career as a DJ and a collector of
records." says the NY emcee. "The Million DJ
March speaks to the longevity of the DJ community. If
deejaying is going to survive in to the future, we are
going to have to take it a little more seriously than
just a party past time."
Founded by A. Shaw, after her many years of
working within the DJ and mixtape community, The Million
DJ March, far from disrespecting or parodying the
Million Man March and its mission, was started in an
effort to bring the DJ community worldwide together on
issues that effect not just the DJ's themselves, but the
music listening public they entertain.
KRS
One expands by saying, "Once and for all, the
American public needs to hear from the DJ's in a unified
voice. There are questions that the American public has
for for the DJ and one of the concerns of the American
public, for DJ's in every medium, is the lack of
responsibility that DJ's show to younger ears. The DJ's
I know care about the public they play for; many of them
are responsible parents themsleves. It is not that DJ's
are irresponsible, it is that DJ's do not speak in one
unified voice on anything. By signing your name to this
event, among other things, you vow to uphold a standard
of excellence in the art of deejaying."
In
addition to unity, the mission of the Million DJ March
is education and inspiration. "The Million DJ March
is a call to excellence in the deejaying industry."
KRS One says. "This is your craft. This is an
opportunity to participate in the further development of
your craft. The uniqueness of The Million DJ March and
its surrounding workshops provides an opportunity for
those just getting started, as well as the seasoned
veterans, to participate in the advancement of deejaying."
A.
Shaw,
who also recently added the well-respected Harlem
advocate DJ S&S as a keynote speaker to the March
and Grammy-winning DJ Dirty Harry (Alicia Keys
"No One") as a performer, couldn't be
happier with her new spokesperson. "I have been aware
and informed about KRS One's Stop the Violence Movement,
and I think it is an extremely positive one." she
shares. "KRS is a voice that rings through cultural
and entertainment barriers. We are ecstatic to have him
on board."

GRANDMASTER FLASH WRITES TELL-ALL:
*Grandmaster
Flash details his life story - from his violent
family life to his drug addiction to creating turntable
techniques that have come to define Hip-Hop - in a new
autobiography titled " The Adventures of Grandmaster
Flash: My Life, My Beats."
"This whole book was scary for me," Flash tells the
New York Daily News. "We as human beings, we
don't willingly display our skeletons, our pains, our
hurts - not the deep, deep, deep ones."
The Broadway Books effort, which hit stores this
week, also includes the volatile relationship Flash had
with Sylvia Robinson, who signed his group
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to their
first record deal with her label Sugar Hill Records.
"She did do some things that in today's world would
probably get her head chopped off," says Flash, whose
real name is Joseph Saddler, "but she did rule
with an iron fist and we were under fear with her -
although we did make some great records"...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"What good people? Yo is it me or are there really some
crazy ass people out there. Did you hear about the
Chinese guy in Canada that was riding the Greyhound
bus, and attacked a passenger and cut his head off
and starting eating him? This type of shit is WAY THE
FUCK OUT THERE. What the hell is going on? That's the
type of shit you really do not expect to hear about.
What the fuck kind of water was he drinking? DAMN!
Not much to report on the music tip, but I do have to
say the new Nas album is decent. I say decent
because some of the beats are suspect, but Nas is
definitely putting it down on the lyrics.
I do have a link you might want to check out. It's
supposed to be a documentary about Racism and the Drug
War, but I think it runs away with the Racism theme a
little more then the drug theme. Here's a quote you'll
see in the video "Marijuana causes white women to seek
sexual relations with Negroes" and that was taken from
Harry J. Anslinger back in 1937. Now that's a
quote for your ass... WOW:
http://therapup.uproxx.com/2008/08/racism-and-the-drug-war.html...
DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver
BC,
Canada): "On our show we had the man of many styles gone
us talking about his two year absense from Hip-Hop as a
result of a car accident. During that time he has been
putting things into perspective and gathering his
thoughts for his re-introduction to the game. Mr. Lif
let us know that we and the rest of his fans should
be on the look out for a new musical series entitled "I
Heard It Today". This exciting series will feature Mr.
Lif releasing a downloadable track every 2 weeks, which
speaks on current political, inequality, and
environmental issues. This is really bringing it back to
the "CNN for Black People" movement and I can't
wait!:
www.myspace.com/mrlif...
Nate
Abney (WKDU-Philly):
"The summer is starting to near its unfortunate end.
Before you know it September will be here and back to
school for the kids and back to the normal grinds for
everyone else. Nas's album sounds pretty
good. Looking forward to hearing Rakim's
album in the fall(should it ever get released). Check
out my people's Louis Logic and JJ Brown
on their re-release remix of the 80's Sinomatic.
It's pretty good stuff and a whole lot of surprise
guests to check for. The Philadelphia Soul won a
championship for the city but you have to look really
hard for people who really care. It just makes the major
4 look even worse now. I'm out for now keep all the good
tunes comin"...
Adam
Lowenstein
(WMHB-ME):
"I have officially left NYC. Peace to everyone I was
able to build with in the city while I was here! As
always, let me know if you need anything from me or from
WMHB! Peace"...
Edgie
Kokoski (WUNH-NH):
"So I haven't bumped into one person in New England
this past week who misses Manny Ramirez. When I
heard about the trade I had the same feeling you have
when that half ugly girl leaves your apartment the
morning after a blurry night at the bar. You're thankful
for what she did, but you're happy that she's gone.
My interest is really peaked by this new record by
Army of the Pharoahs member Doap Nixon.
From what I've listened to online, it's the perfect size
album at twelve tracks and seems to be bolstered by head
nodding beats and competent lyricism. Just don't expect
any promotional copies from Babygrande. Their
Sales Prevention...ah...I mean PR team has done their
normal excellent job of ignoring radio while feeling
content sending me twenty video email blasts a day
hyping the albums they won't service.
I know that I'm too old to be in the Hip-Hop business
anymore when Master P gets the key to the city of
Memphis,
Tennessee. At one point in the late 90's, Master P
represented the anti-Christ of real Hip-Hop to
me. Now he's a community leader. You can't front on him.
Do you know that aside from his hackneyed music catalog,
Master P has appeared in over 30 feature length films?
Even more impressive is the fact that most of them have
premiered on the dollar rack at
Louisiana
Wal-Mart check outs.
Editor's note: earlier in this column when Edgie
mentioned a "half ugly girl" leaving his apartment, what
he meant to say was "all the way ugly". We apologize for
the error"...
