Ice-T
Releases Special Edition Digital Album
Hip-Hop veteran Ice-T has released a special
edition of his eighth studio album Gangsta Rap.
The Gangsta Rap Special Edition is available on
digital download now, and features two
previously-unreleased tracks, as well as an alternative
silhouette version of the album's original controversial
cover. Last Tuesday (June 17), Gangsta Rap Special
Edition was made available exclusively to Sprint
PCS
customers, through the wireless company's "New Track
Tuesdays."
Released through PayUp Records, the digital label
owned and operated by Ice-T's long-time manager
Mickey Bentson, and Final Level Records, the
new album will be distributed through INGrooves.
"Like [Ice-T] says, 'Hip-Hop is really on the ER table,
and it needs resuscitation, it needs help'," Bentson
told AllHipHop.com. "We gave Melee
[Records] a little over a year to work it, and we felt
the time was right to give the album a second push.
"Since a lot of people are claiming to do hardcore, 'gangsta
rap,' it's time to see what an O.G. does and how it's
done," Bentson said. "Really envision the records,
listen to the records, and you can actually feel the
records when he's finished. He's always been able to get
you to visually see what he's doing, maybe that's why
he's on TV today."
Originally released on Melee Records in October 2006,
Gangsta Rap made a few headlines due to it's cover:
a nude rendering of Ice T and his wife CoCo. The
distribution arrangement for the special edition means
the new album is available through all online retailers,
including iTunes, Rhapsody and
Amazon.com. INGrooves also handles distribution for
the likes of Too $hort, The Cool Kids,
Ky-Mani Marley and even Dolly Parton...
GRANDMASTER FLASH WRITES TELL-ALL:
*Grandmaster
Flash details his life story - from his violent
family life to his drug addiction to creating turntable
techniques that have come to define Hip-Hop - in a new
autobiography titled " The Adventures of Grandmaster
Flash: My Life, My Beats."
"This whole book was scary for me," Flash tells the
New York Daily News. "We as human beings, we
don't willingly display our skeletons, our pains, our
hurts - not the deep, deep, deep ones."
The Broadway Books effort, which hit stores this
week, also includes the volatile relationship Flash had
with Sylvia Robinson, who signed his group
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to their
first record deal with her label Sugar Hill Records.
"She did do some things that in today's world would
probably get her head chopped off," says Flash, whose
real name is Joseph Saddler, "but she did rule
with an iron fist and we were under fear with her -
although we did make some great records"...
Urban
Music Alliance is the only digital distributor catering
to the needs of the Urban market:
More
and more, it has become clear that Urban Artists are
being treated unfairly by record labels and management
alike, there is little opportunity for them to be
exposed in the US and Global markets, and that limited
exposure generally rewards the record Labels and
Management to a far greater extent than the artists who
do the hard work. Urban Music Alliance is
addressing that disparity, giving Artists an opportunity
to sell their product Internationally at Royalty Rates
generally reserved for Record Companies, and with
complete transparency.
Urban
Music Alliance is a digital media distribution company
that provides various distribution and marketing
services for its Artists/Labels. Our network of digital
retail partners includes all the major distributors such
as iTunes, Amazon, eMusic,
Rhapsody, Napster, Sprint, Verizon
and T Mobile, as well as dozens of newly
emerging outlets. We distribute to retailers around the
world and are tapped into the most efficient delivery
and content management systems in the business. Our
Console allows our clients complete access to view the
status of their sales and releases. Clients can view
where their releases have been delivered, where they are
in the distribution process and most importantly, see a
very detailed sales history. Urban Music Alliance is the
only digital distributor catering to the needs of the
Urban market. For more info email:

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver BC, Canada): "Last
week on the radio show we celebrated Canadian Day, which
is not a made up South Park term, but rather our own
version of Independence Day. Instead of lighting off
fireworks in the studio or painting our faces red, we
decided to devote two and a half hours to Hip-Hop from
the North including having guests: Tru-Paz and
Moka Only join us.
www.myspace.com/trupaz
www.myspace.com/mokaonly
Over the years of doing guest DJ spots down in the U.S.
people have not only enjoyed the Canadian brand of
Hip-Hop, but have appreciated
being put on to it. And right now the Canadian Hip-Hop
scene has never been better. There are so many talented
individuals, groups, and collectives that I have been
put on to in the last year; not to mention Kardinal
Offishall success in the US with his smash hit
"Dangerous". So do yourself a favor, grab a Molson
Canadian or some Canadian Bud (preferably that BC
flavor) and check this show out.
And, to all my U.S. DJs holla at me if you want any of
the mp3s from these featured artists.
The RZA show was crazy last week! Thanks to the
Bay area homie, Kevvy Kev, for the hook up. You
killed it on the 1s and 2s!

Brian
"ColdRigourous"
Leahy (WHUS-CT): "Happy day-after-Canada
Day everybody, I had a good night drinking Molson
Canadians and bar-b-queing. First time I actually
celebrated Canada Day in the USA. Proper!"...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA): "Now
I was never one to actually give credence to Nas'
thought that Hip Hop was dead. I always believed that as
long as you had artists such Little Brother,
Termanology, Common, & DJ Premier that
the music will always have realness to it. And then I
heard Common's new song "UMC" and realized that Nas was
a prophet with his proclamation. What a craptacular song
this is. It's been a long time since I've felt an
artists fell this far off with a song. I think the last
time this happened was, after blessing us with "Murdergram",
LL gave the world "Pink Cookies". It just doesn't
make sense. Where is the love for Hip Hop in music? The
only love there is in music anymore is the love for
money. That's why things are so screwed up. If money is
the reason you're on the mic, you have no business
wasting my time with your music. So don't. I can only
hope that this "UMC"
song is no indication of what we'll hear on Common's new
album because, if it is, then we are all in trouble"...
Nate Abney
(WKDU-PA): ".
Checked out my homies Louis Logic and JJ BROWN
at the Khyber in Philly over the weekend. I realized
that all the songs represented a time in our life from
almost a decade ago at the old 5G apartment in Penn
State. So while there was a 21 year old who didn't know
OG by Ice T when JJ threw it on, they knew all of
Lou and J's stuff. That made me feel a little less like
a dinosaur fossil at least. Be on the lookout for an
upcoming Reef the Lost Cauze/JJ Brown album, the
remix album for Sin-O-mATIC, JJ Brown solo album, and
more stuff from the 5g crew(one day the Flight
Brothers too). The Phillies won so first place is
still good for now. Out for now peace"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA): "The
NBA draft is here and gone, and I have to say I'm
not really sure what the big deal is about it. I'm a fan
of the NBA, but that draft really didn't really excite
me at all. The funniest part about it was hearing the
drunk hecklers in the background.
Not much to in the music world really exciting to talk
about. I'm still a little confused on how Lil Wayne
sold a million in the first week, but I'm almost
willing to bet that it came from bulk sales from places
like BestBuy, Wal-Mart, etc. Like I said
last week I like about 4 tracks off the album, but that
was because of the beats and not the lyrics.
Anybody catch the
BET
awards? I have to say I was impressed with the show this
year. It probably the best BET awards show I've seen
since they've done it, and the performances were decent
too"...
Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "I
continue to be dumbfounded by the continuing
ridiculousness that is XXL magazine. I
remember when The Source was firmly
entrenched in its downward spiral and XXL was the breath
of fresh air with articles that were actually about the
music and not a bunch of commercialized garbage. This
month's XXL just showed up at my door with a six page
profile of lawyers who have represented Hip-Hop stars in
trouble with the law, and an eight page spread on new
luxury cars. The sad thing is, I'd cancel my
subscription but at $12 a year it's hardly worth the
trouble. That's like 3 gallons of gas these days. Or
twelve Hannah Montana songs on iTunes.
Although Hip-Hop magazines suck these days, I was
actually surprised to peep some good albums this
weekend. Amongst my latest purchases are the new limited
edition Alchemist "Cutting Room Floor 2" which is
chock full of rarities, and a new disc by the very slept
on Snowgoons. These dudes out of German have one
of the most star studded rosters on their LP that I've
seen in recent memory, and have dramatic and energetic
production that is a collison between Classical music
and Jedi Mind Tricks. It's the best German music
I've heard since Kraftwerk. And I celebrate
Kraftwerk's entire catalog.
Those of us that work in the firearms industry were
pretty happy this past week that the Supreme Court came
out in defense of American's 2nd Amendment right to bear
arms in order to protect our homes. Personally, I'm just
relieved that it will insure my ability to keep my seven
Mac 11s, my eight .38s, my nine nines, and my Mac 10. So
anti-gun advocates, tell me how my ass tastes?"...
AJ Rok
(TheBestJams.com): "This email was inspired by
what i saw last night on Hip Hop Vs America on
BET.
We are quick to talk about and complain about what's
wrong with Hip-Hop, about the lyrics and images that are
being force fed to out youth, to our young sisters. We
are quick to forward every email about R Kelly,
Don Imus and anything else that negative, but
rarely do we do anything about it. Conversation is good
but its only a start. I am doin promotions for a Atlanta
based rap group called Vintage Imperial, they
have a new record called GIRLS
ROCK
TOO! Now I challenge everyone, especially my sistahs who
are tired or the negative portrayal of females in
Hip-Hop.
Listen to this record, if ya feel it, forward to al your
people, post this track on your myspace pages, your
blogs, your black planet pages, your websites, put in on
ya mp3 player, burn to a cd and play in ya cars, play it
for ya daughters and ya sons for that matter. Artists
like these don't receive love for commercial radio and
entities like BET and MTV. These records don't get
written about in your major newspapers or magazines like
Ebony, Jet, and
Essence. So rarely do you know they exist. Today
is your chance to change that.
Now I know this will not single-handedly change the face
of Hip-Hop by itself, but neither does sitting around
the water cooler or wherever complaining about it. But
until we let the world know these kind of records exist,
until we let them know there is real hip hop out there
we cant expect people to play or request these songs. So
I am on a mission to get the word out by any means
necessary and the same way we forward emails with
negative news to everyone in our address books, I
challenge you to do the same with this email.
For more information, for drop request for your shows,
your interview request contact AJ Woodson/
Big Mouth Ntertainment at 678-548-9904 or
bigmouthntertainment@gmail.com
You want a change, you want to hear something different,
show the major corporations that control what you listen
to and watch that you want more and help me spread the
word about this track and others like this"...
